Attendance Policy

All students between the ages of 7 and 18 years, who have not completed grade 12, are required to regularly attend school unless otherwise exempted by law. School staff will monitor and report violations of the state compulsory attendance law. All students 5 or 6 years of age who have been enrolled in a public school are required to attend regularly. Any parent who fails to send a student to school within three (3) days of notification by the district that their student is not complying with compulsory attendance requirements may be issued a citation by the district for the student's failure to attend school. Failure to send a student to school is a Class C violation of law and is punishable by a court imposed fine, as provided by ORS 339.925.

The District will notify the parent/legal guardian in writing that, in accordance with law, the Superintendent or designee will attempt to schedule a conference with the non-attending student and his/her parent(s)/legal guardian(s) to discuss attendance requirements. The written notice will include the following:

The written notice will be in the language of the parent. Additionally, a parent or guardian, or other person lawfully charged with the care or custody of a student under 15 years of age, may under ORS 163.577 (l)(c) be found by the courts to have committed the offense of failing to supervise a child who has failed to attend school as required.

Failing to supervise a child is a Class A violation. Violations, as determined by the court, may be punishable by a requirement to complete a parent effectiveness program approved by the court and/or a fine.

Absence and Excuses

Parents and guardians may desire their student's absence from school be excused.

The principal will be responsible for assessing and acting upon parental requests for students to be excused (Policy JED).

Each school shall notify parent/guardians by the end of the day if their child has an unplanned absence. The notification will be either in person, by telephone or another method identified in writing by the parent/guardian. If the parent/guardian cannot be notified by the above methods, a message shall be left, if possible.

If the parent, guardian or adult student disagrees with the discretionary determination of the administrator, they have five (5) days from the notice of the decisions to file a complaint under the procedures of the School District governing such (Policy KL).

Release of Students from School

A student shall not be released from school at times other than regular dismissal hours except with the principals permission or according to school sign-out procedures. The school office personnel will determine that permission has been granted before allowing the student to leave. A student will not be released to any person without the approval of his/her parent/legal guardian or as otherwise provided by law.
